Maher: Is There A Messiah Complex With Mitt Romney?
"Do you think that they have a messiah complex because I always heard that Obama was 'The One,' you know?" Bill Maher asked on his HBO show "Real Time" on Friday.
"I heard Ann Romney say this week. She was interview on '30 Rock.' They asked her, 'Why do you work so hard for Mitt?' "¦ 'I believe in my heart that Mitt is going to save America.' Really? Save? Does America need saving? That's like when Justin Timberlake was going to bring sexy back," Maher said.
"Does America actually need saving?" Maher said.
MSNBC's Alex Wagner turned this into a racial issue in an incoherent rant: "I think it's part of this sort of -- quasi-religious terminology. It's part of this sort of, I think, missionary ethos, this crusader ethos. It's very, like -- I mean, it is. It definitely is and I think it's also a way of painting Barack Obama, again, as an 'other,' not a real American. Someone who is trying to take our country down, which is I mean, pretty strong rhetoric and very -- the message of it, if you talk about being a patriot, this is the president of the United States."
