Former Attorney General Michael Mukasey: Lynch Should Recuse Herself From Hillary Email Investigation
Thursday on Fox News Channel’s “The Kelly File,” former U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey reacted to a report that current U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch had met with former President Bill Clinton while his wife, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, was under investigation for her use of a private email server while secretary of state. Mukasey called the meeting a mistake and dismissed the claim it was a chance encounter. “I think it was a mistake,” Mukasey said. “People make mistakes all the time. It was a mistake because you don’t take a meeting with the spouse of somebody who was the subject of an investigation by your department. It’s not that that’s a written rule any more than it’s a written rule that a surgeon washes his hands before he operates. There are some things that are so elementary that you don’t have to have a written rule to have them in effect.” “Megyn, the attorney general is protected by a security detail of FBI agents,” Mukasey said. “I assume she was traveling with staff since she was on government business. The president is protected by a detail of Secret Service agents. They don’t work for the same department.

On Thursday’s broadcast of CNN’s “AC 360,” journalist, author, and CNN Political Analyst Carl Bernstein blasted Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s meeting with Bill Clinton as “inexplicable,” “wrong,” and “improper,” and called for Lynch to recuse herself from the investigation into Democratic presidential nominee former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton because “It’s unthinkable that she can go on being in charge of this investigation.” Bernstein said, “This plays right into Trump’s hand, but the terrible thing is the incredible lapse in judgment by both the attorney general and Bill Clinton. It’s inexplicable, it’s wrong, it’s improper, and she needs, the attorney general, to now recuse herself from overseeing this investigation and turn it over to the deputy attorney general in charge of the Criminal Division. It’s unthinkable that she can go on being in charge of this investigation.” Guest anchor Jake Tapper added that John Ashcroft recused himself from the investigation into the Valerie Plame leak, and that then-Senators Obama and Clinton called for Alberto Gonzales to recuse himself from the investigation into Jack Abramoff. Bernstein later stated, “Well, the important thing here is, that something like this shouldn’t happen, that among other things, Bill Clinton, the Clinton Foundation may be
