Carl Bernstein: Trump Has ‘Lied as No President of the United States in My Lifetime Has’
Sunday on CNN’s “Reliable Sources,” reporter Carl Bernstein said President Donald Trump had “lied as no president of the United States in my lifetime.” Bernstein said “I wish this president well. He is the duly elected president of the United States, and he deserves respect as the duly elected president of the United States. That doesn’t mean he deserves not to be called on lies. He has lied as no president of the United States in my lifetime has, day in and day out. It is our job to look, as I said in that address to the correspondents’ dinner last night: follow the money, yes, but follow the lies as well.” (h/t The Hill) Follow Pam Key on Twitter @pamkeyNEN
McCain: Trump Should Release His Tax Returns
Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said President Donald Trump should release his tax returns. Host Jake Tapper asked, “Given that President Trump is proposing changes that could benefit him personally by tens of millions if not hundreds of millions of dollars, do you think that the American people have a right to see his tax returns so that they can know how this plan would affect his bottom line?” McCain answered, “I think I’ve said all along I thought every candidate for president should disclose their tax returns. I haven’t changed.” Follow Pam Key on Twitter @pamkeyNEN
Schumer: If Trump Changes, We Could Work Together
On this weekend’s broadcast of “Fox News Sunday,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said if President Donald Trump were to change, Democrats could work with him. Schumer said, “The bottom line is very simple: the president, if he works with us, particularly on issues like trade and infrastructure, we can work. But on the issues so far, taxes and healthcare, he doesn’t consult us at all.” He added, “He’s not governing from the middle, he’s governing from the hard right. That’s why his regime has had hardly any major successes, with the exception of Gorsuch. If he changes, we can work together. But he can’t just dictate what he wants.” Follow Pam Key on Twitter @pamkeyNEN
Trump: Schumer a ‘Bad Leader’ Who Is ‘Hurting the Country’
Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” President Donald Trump said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) had “turned out to be a bad leader and was hurting the country. Partial transcript as follows: TRUMP: Well, I think things generally tend to go a little bit slower than you’d like them to go. DICKERSON: Why? TRUMP: Just a system. It’s just a very, very bureaucratic system. I think the rules in Congress and in particular the rules in the Senate are unbelievably archaic and slow moving. And in many cases, unfair. In many cases, you’re forced to make deals that are not the deal you’d make. You’d make a much different kind of a deal. You’re forced into situations that you hate to be forced into. I also learned, and this is very sad, because we have a country that we have to take care of. The Democrats have been totally obstructionist. Chuck Schumer has turned out to be a bad leader. He’s a bad leader for the country. And the Democrats are extremely obstructionist. All they do is obstruct. All they do is delay. Even our Supreme Court justice, as you know, who I think is going to be outstanding,
Le Pen Blames Enviromental Damage on ‘Unbridled Globalisation’
PARIS (AFP) – With a week to go before France’s presidential election runoff, right wing candidate Marine Le Pen played the green card outside a controversial aluminium plant in the south of the country. Le Pen has made a series of targeted campaign stops in a bid to close a 19-point gap in voter surveys with centrist frontrunner Emmanuel Macron, 39. Vowing to pursue a vision of “true ecology”, the 48-year-old National Front (FN) candidate said the Alteo plant in the town of Gardanne was a symbol of a false choice between jobs and the environment. The plant, with a workforce of some 400 as well as around 300 sub-contractors, is controversial for dumping toxic waste known as “red mud” into a Mediterranean nature reserve for decades. Last year the government of former Socialist prime minister Manuel Valls gave it an additional six years to comply with EU norms, prompting the European Commission to request an explanation. The plant “is a symbol because they want us to believe that the choice is between jobs and health and the environment,” Le Pen told a handful of reporters outside the plant during her previously unannounced stop. “I’m here to say that… there would not
Trump to CBS’s Dickerson: ‘I Love Your Show — I Call It Deface the Nation’
Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” President Donald Trump said to host John Dickerson, “I love your show. I call it Deface the Nation.” Partial transcript as follows: TRUMP: Well, it’s a tough job. But I’ve had a lot of tough jobs. I’ve had things that were tougher, although I’ll let you know that better at the end of eight years. Perhaps eight years. Hopefully, eight years. But I’ll let you know later on. I think we’ve done very well with foreign policy. I think we’ve done very, very well with relationships with other leaders. I think we’re doing great on trade deals. It’s set. And I think we’re doing well. I mean, our country is being out-traded at every single point. We’re losing tremendous amounts of money on trade. And I think actually, I’ve been very consistent. You know, it’s very funny when the fake media goes out, you know, which we call the mainstream media which sometimes, I must say, is you. DICKERSON: You mean me personally or? TRUMP: Well, your show. I love your show. I call it Deface the Nation. But, you know, your show is sometimes not exactly correct. But when they talk about currency
Samantha Bee: America Does Not Have a ‘Smug Liberal Problem’
Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” TBS’s “Full Frontal” host Samantha Bee said America does not have a”smug liberal” problem while discussing her “Not The White House Correspondents Dinner” special. When asked if there is a smug liberal problem in the United States Bee said, “I just can’t take responsibility for the way the election turned out. I just absolutely just — I don’t, I can’t. Is there a smug liberal problem? I guess you know I don’t think there is. I do the show for me and for people like me, and I don’t really care how the rest of the world sees it, quite frankly. That’s great. We make a show for ourselves. We put it out in the world. We birth it, and then the world receives it however they want to receive it. What can I do? Pelosi: ‘I Never Thought I Would Pray for the Day’ Bush Were President Again
Sunday on ABC’s “This Week,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) accidentally referred to President Donald Trump as former President George W. Bush and then said she prayed Bush was president again. Pelosi said, “And winning means winning for the American people. That either we win or whoever wins understands the priorities of the American people. And they are not what President Bush — excuse me. I’m so sorry, President Bush. I never thought I would pray for the day that you were president again.” Follow Pam Key on Twitter @pamkeyNEN
Susan Rice: I Didn’t Do Anything ‘Untoward’ With Intelligence
Sunday on CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS,” while discussing the controversy over the unmasking of Trump campaign personnel, President Barack Obama’s former national security adviser Susan Rice said she didn’t do anything “untoward” with intelligence on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Partial transcript as follows: ZAKARIA: One of the elements of fallout from Russia’s attempt to influence the American election was that there was a certain amount of intelligence work being done on Russia. Our intelligence agencies were listening to what Russian government officials or Russian intelligence officials were saying. Donald Trump has accused you of trying to unmask the Americans on the other end of those conversations in an attempt to implicate the Trump campaign or people associated with Trump in some kind of collusion with Russia. What is your reaction to that? It’s an extraordinary charge by the President of the United States. RICE: Well Fareed, it’s absolutely false. I’ve addressed this previously. I think now we’ve had subsequently members of Congress on the intelligence committees on both sides of the aisle take a look at the information that apparently was the basis for Chairman Nunes’ concern and say publicly that they didn’t see anything that was
