MSNBC Analyst on Antifa: ‘Not a Bad Label’ to Be Against Fascism, Nazism
Saturday on MSNBC, as protests were underway in Boston, MSNBC law enforcement expert Jim Cavanaugh spoke about the group Antifa and its presence, which might have led to violence. However, Cavanaugh said the label on their positions was not a “bad” thing. “[L]ook at this, 20,000 people,” he said. “What a statement for America that at right now are all peaceful. Now, there could be a very few black bloc or Antifa people who want to commit violence. But, you know, as far as being anti-fascist, all of America was anti-fascist in World War II. Everybody in America was anti-fascist. So that’s not a bad label to be against fascism or Nazism or neo-Nazism. But it’s how you behave out there today. And look — this is so commendable, and I think so powerful right now. (h/t RCP Video) Follow Jeff Poor on Twitter @jeff_poor
Saudi Arabia Debates Whether Polygamy Is Solution to Rising Issue of Single Women
TEL AVIV – Saudi Arabia has recently become embroiled in a debate over the notion that polygamy could provide the solution to the problem of single women in the kingdom, with some proponents saying men should take three wives – a single woman, a widow, and a divorcee – thus alleviating the burden of spinsters on society.
MSNBC Guest: ‘You Still Have Actual Nazis’ in the White House
Saturday on MSNBC’s “AM Joy,” journalist Sarah Kendzior said that even though Steve Bannon is out of the White House, there are still “actual Nazis’ in the White House. Kendzior failed to back up her claim that “actual Nazis” that are still in the White House, only saying that Attorney General Jeff Sessions is a “long-time antagonist against civil rights.” “[T]his is still a white-supremacist house,” Kendzior argued. “You still have actual Nazis in the house. You have Jeff Sessions, who’s a long-time antagonist against civil rights and you have policies that back up these ideas in practice. And so what Bannon is probably going to do when he leaves is just support this aspect of Trump’s agenda from the outside, which could be, actually I think, more dangerous and more harmful than having him in the White House, where he was, as mentioned, somewhat contained.” (h/t Legal Insurrection) Follow Trent Baker on Twitter @MagnifiTrent
The Atlantic’s Ball: Trump Isn’t Using a Dog Whistle, ‘He’s Using a People Whistle’ That Emboldens Radical Elements
On Friday’s broadcast of PBS’ “Washington Week,” The Atlantic political writer Molly Ball said President Trump has emboldened radical strains in the GOP and won’t tell such groups that he doesn’t want their votes. Ball stated that leaders in the Republican Party have tried to squash the radical strains in their party. She added that some would argue that they “cynically used some of these sentiments as sort dog whistles.” She continued, “But Trump is not using a dog whistle. He’s using a people whistle. Everyone can hear it. He’s saying it out loud. And that really does embolden people and bring them out. As opposed to, the John Birch Society, which William F. Buckley famously excommunicated from the Republican Party. … Trump will not say to these people, ‘We don’t want your votes.’” Follow Ian Hanchett on Twitter @IanHanchett
TIME’s Scherer: Trump Has Used Racial Tensions to Further His Agenda and ‘Rally His Base’
On Friday’s broadcast of PBS’ “Washington Week,” TIME Magazine Washington Bureau Chief Michael Scherer argued that President Trump has used racial tensions to further his own agenda. Scherer said that while the president “has not ever argued for racial superiority or said something explicitly racist, has through his career, and definitely his candidacy, constantly taken racial tensions and used them as opportunities to further his own career, agenda, and to rally his base. And I think when he sees a situation like that, that’s just his instinct.” Scherer cited Trump’s comments about Judge Gonzalo Curiel and retweet of false statistics about the racial breakdown of crime.
