Rome Eyes Buildings Confiscated from Mafia to House Migrants
ROME (AP) — Rome authorities are looking into whether buildings confiscated from the mafia can be used to house migrants, a move that comes after police were criticized for the violent clashes that erupted as they tried to evacuate a building occupied by asylum-seekers. Mayor Virginia Raggi said city officials were mapping out the confiscated real estate to determine if any buildings were suitable for temporary housing. A first census of the 200,000 potentially available apartments is due by Oct. 31, Raggi said in a Facebook post Tuesday. Rome authorities and police have come under withering criticism after officers used water cannons against asylum-seekers last week. The migrants, mostly from Eritrea and Ethiopia, had camped out on a central piazza after being evicted from a building they had occupied since 2013. Police said the raids were necessary because the migrants had cooking gas canisters and other flammable materials. The U.N. refugee agency denounced the evictions, especially when adequate alternative housing arrangements weren’t provided. Raggi defended the police action Tuesday and said the city wouldn’t tolerate illegal squatters. She estimated that squatters had occupied about 100 buildings around the capital. Syrian Migrants Arrested After Stealing Car… To Drive to Asylum Application Police Station
A pair of Syrian asylum seekers were arrested during their asylum application in Austria after the man whose car they had stolen turned up to the same police station at the same time as them to report the crime. The Syrians are said to have stolen the parked car in the western Austrian town of Bregenz on Saturday afternoon. The crime occurred at around 1:30 pm according to police, who identified the two men later from video footage taken near the scene, Kronen Zeitung reports. After stealing the car the pair drove to the local police station where they told authorities they wished to apply for asylum. At the same time, the owner of the stolen car arrived at the police station to report the theft and was placed in the room next to the two asylum seekers. Police were able to examine footage taken by a witness of the crime and positively identify that the asylum seekers were the ones who stole the vehicle and promptly transferred them to Feldkirch Prison at the request of the local prosecutor. Migrant crime has become a significant problem in Austria, as chronicled at length by Breitbart London. The most pressing issue for the Austrian authorities
GOP Sen Lee: ‘If We Don’t Get Tax Reform Done, We Are Dead’
Wednesday on Fox Business Network’s “Varney & Company,” Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) said the Republicans must deliver tax reform or they “are dead.” Lee said, “I think we will because we have to. The American people elected us expecting us to repeal Obamacare and bring about tax reform. We haven’t repealed Obamacare. If we don’t get tax reform done, we are dead. We might as well flip up our tent and go home.” He added, “We have the highest corporate tax rate in the developed world. What we do know is the corporate tax rate while it’s something that a lot of people think being born by big wealthy corporate fat cats, in fact, comes off of the bottom line of poor and middle-class Americans and have diminished wages and underemployment as a result of this high corporate tax rate.” (h/t Grabien) Follow Pam Key on Twitter @pamkeyNEN
