Joel Osteen Responds to Attacks: Social Media ‘Can Create This False Narrative’
Wednesday on NBC’s “Today,” Houston’s Lakewood Church pastor Joel Osteen responded to critics who claimed his church had not done enough to help with those stranded due to the flooding in the city from Hurricane Harvey. Osteen explained that that location of his church had been prone to flooding and that the city of Houston had not asked for his help in dealing with the crisis. Without the proper warning, Osteen said his church had been unable to prepare for any assistance efforts. He suggested that social media had been responsible for the “false narrative” that his church was refusing to help. “I think sometimes, somehow social media can be very powerful and it can create this false narrative, but if you’re sitting in another state and you’re not here — I mean, my niece was stranded right across the street from this building, nowhere to go,” Osteen said. “This building was one foot from flooding. If we didn’t have our floodgates, it would have flooded. It’s easy to say, ‘Wow, there’s this big building. They’re not using it. But, we don’t have volunteers, and we don’t have staff that could get here. So, we’re all about helping the city whenever

After Near 1,000 Arrests, 28 Officers Injured, UK Police Union Boss Calls For Notting Hill Carnival To Be Cancelled
Some 313 people were arrested during this year’s Notting Hill Carnival with a further 656 made proactively in the weeks beforehand, and now the boss of the London Police Federation has called time on the annual party which is known for criminality, as well as costumes and parades. The Daily Telegraph reports: The Notting Hill Carnival should be cancelled because of the number of police officers who are attacked at the event, the chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation has suggested. Ken Marsh, who leads the rank-and-file group, said it is a “disgrace” that police officers were attacked with blood and bottles. The Bank Holiday weekend event in west London saw 28 police officers injured, with bottles and other objects thrown at them, blood spat at them and a potentially acidic substance thrown at them. Mr Marsh said: “What other event would be allowed to carry on regardless with so many police colleagues under attack?” He said he suspected the true figure of officers injured on duty during the two-day carnival will end up being more than 28 – the number released by the Metropolitan Police on Monday night. WaPo’s Samenow: ‘Global Warming Intensified’ Harvey ‘Some’
On Wednesday’s broadcast of CNN’s “New Day,” Washington Post Weather Editor Jason Samenow argued that global warming cause some increase in Hurricane Harvey’s intensity. Samenow said, “If we look back at the temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico, back in the winter, when I wrote that story, it was 70 — the water temperature in the Gulf of Mexico never fell below 73 degrees. Texas had its warmest winter. Louisiana had its warmest winter on record. Galveston had record highs on a quarter of their days back last winter. And New Orleans also had its warmest February on record. So, there was just abnormal warmth in the Gulf Coast states back in the winter. The warm water persisted in the Gulf of Mexico leading up to Hurricane Harvey. And you need that fuel. You need that warm water in the Gulf of Mexico to power these storms, and we saw that explosive intensification of Harvey as it approached the Texas coast. So, obviously, the warm water spurred by climate change played a role here. Now, of course there’s natural variability. We’ve had hurricanes hit the Gulf Coast for decades. So, I think there’s a combination. I think global warming intensified the storm
