A South Carolina high school is defending itself after not allowing students to bring American flags into their football games Friday, WNCN reports. The principal of Travelers Rest High School reasoned the decision was made because the American flag had been used in the past to taunt students of Berea High, which has a large number of Hispanic students. Travelers Rest High School principal Lou Lavely said in the statement he released this weekend that he does not condone the improper “taunting” from his students directed to the Berea High students, who the Travelers played Friday night. Here is the official statement from principal Lavely: Some events at last evening’s football game have resulted in concerns being raised in our community. I am writing to assure that any decisions made regarding American flags being permitted into the game were made in the best interests of all attending the game and in the spirit of patriotism and respect for our flag. Any decision to not allow the American flag to be used in an improper “taunting”, unsportsmanlike manner is first and foremost in the interests of promoting the safety and well-being of all in attendance at school events.
