Charlene Wilburn, an elementary school educator in Washington, D.C., wrote the below message to the White House email list to share why she’s proud to see Judge Garland named as President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee.

I’ve been a public elementary school teacher for 29 years. In all that time, I’ve never known a more dedicated volunteer than Judge Merrick Garland.
That’s why it was such a joy to see President Obama name him to serve on the Supreme Court.
Now, as a teacher, I come across a lot of people who talk about putting children first. But Judge Garland is someone who puts his words into action.
I met Judge Garland nearly 10 years ago when I started teaching at the same elementary school in D.C. where he volunteers. He wanted to find a way he could make the most impact on the lives of children in need, so he offered his time as a tutor.
He came down to our school every other week, working one-on-one with students for an hour during the day to help them with reading, math, or any other lesson. After doing this week after week for 10 years, he’s now the longest serving volunteer tutor I’ve seen at this school.
For me, this is about so much more than tutoring. It’s about our children having another adult in their lives who encourages them when they need it, supports them when they falter, and tells them to never give up on their dreams.
I’ll tell you what I appreciate most about this man: He never asks for recognition, or fanfare. He just does what he committed to do. He even convinced some of his staff to volunteer too, so now we have a whole group of volunteers that come down from his office to help.
Now, that’s character. I think our world would be a much better place if we had more people as committed to the idea of service as Judge Garland.
Thank you for listening,
Charlene

Julieta Garibay: Trump, Rubio, and Cruz Are Saying It’s Okay To Racist Against Latino Immigrants, Using ‘Hate Speech’
Julieta Garibay, the Campaigns Director for United We Dream Action argued that Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Texas Senator Ted Cruz, along with Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) are saying ” if you’re an anti-immigrant, if you’re racist, it’s perfectly okay to make it loud, and actually to use violence against these people” on Saturday’s “The Place for Politics” on MSNBC. Garbiay said, “[W]e know that what Trump, what Rubio, what Cruz have been doing is to basically say, you know what, if you’re an anti-immigrant, if you’re racist, it’s perfectly okay to make it loud, and actually to use violence against these people, not only against Latino immigrants, but against other immigrants like Muslims.” She added, “I mean, they were both using the same — maybe different words, but the same hate speech, right? Maybe Rubio would say, like, oh, well, I support immigration reform for enforcement. But I will also get rid of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, meaning DACA, aka, I will deport these young people, as well as their families. Trump just says this in a more vulgar way. That’s the only difference. But it’s basically the same thing. I’m going to deport everybody who’s not
Seton Hall Law Prof: GOP Acting Like Obama Doesn’t Have Power And They Don’t Have To Advise and Consent
Seton Hall University Law Professor Mark Alexander argued Republicans in the Senate are acting like President Obama doesn’t have the power to appoint justices and “they don’t have to” give advice and consent on Saturday’s “The Place for Politics” on MSNBC. Alexander said, “There’s a pattern. When a member of Congress stands up and yells ‘You lie,’ going back to the beginning, going all the way through this point, the treatment towards the president. And let’s remember, it’s the president. You know, he is the president of the United States, and he’s going to do his job throughout his eight years. He was elected twice. the people have had their say. And he’s going to continue to do his job. The Republicans in the Senate are acting as if he doesn’t have the power. But the reality is, as a con law professor myself, the Constitution says he has the power to make the appointment, and the Senate has to do its job, advice and consent. But they’re acting like they don’t have to do that.” Follow Ian Hanchett on Twitter @IanHanchett
Jason Johnson: Obama’s Garland Pick ‘Smack In the Face’ To African-American Women and Asian-Americans
The Root Politics Editor Dr. Jason Johnson stated that President Obama’s selection of Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court is “a smack in the face to African-American women, to Asian-Americans, to the entire coalition of people who have allowed him to win them both” on Saturday’s “The Place for Politics” on MSNBC. Johnson said, “Isn’t it nice that President Obama is engaging in the same kind of tokenism that he’s railed against at different parts of his administration? So you put two women on the court, so I guess now that’s enough? I have had a huge problem with the entire way that President Obama has handled this. Number one, I think, again, he has abdicated to the Republican Party. He’s always trying to make friends with people who don’t like him. Number two, he’s not playing to win. Look, this is your opportunity to change the Supreme Court for the next 25 years ,and you go for the easiest, most milquetoast selection that you can find. And lastly, honestly, I think it’s a smack in the face to African-American women, to Asian-Americans, to the entire coalition of people who have allowed him to win them both, and he’s
