The trial of a man accused of beating a Christian migrant convert may come to an end because of a dispute over his age. An Afghan migrant is currently on trial in a German court where he is accused of brutally beating an Iranian migrant who had recently converted to Christianity. The perpetrator of the attack, who is himself Muslim, was said to have beaten the 24-year-old Iranian so badly that he faces charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault. The defence has now cast doubt on the alleged age of the attacker at the time, and the judge may be forced to call for a mis-trial on the basis of him being under the age of criminal responsibility, Die Welt reports. The crime took place at a migrant centre in Hamburg in October of last year and saw the Afghan beat the recently converted Iranian with a telescopic baton while he yelled “Allahu Akbar”. The prosecution maintains that the attacker was 22 years old at the time of the attack and should be prosecuted as an adult. Sweden’s state-funded broadcaster has revealed that of 163,000 migrants who came to Sweden, less than 500 have found jobs. Sweden saw a record 163,000 applications for asylum last year as a result of the migrant crisis and many Swedes were assured that the new arrivals would contribute to the economy; but new research from Sweden’s state-owned SVT reveals that fewer than 500 migrants have found work. Using data from the Swedish employment agency and the Swedish migration authority, Migrationsverket, the network claims that only 494 asylum seekers are contributing to the economy, The Local reports. While in many countries asylum seekers are banned from formally working while their application is being processed, in Sweden there are exceptions. The “at-und” is an exemption granted by Migrationsverket which allows asylums seekers access to the labour market. In an effort to explain the incredibly low number of migrants working, Lisa Bergstrand of Migrationsverket told SVT: “There was an incredible number of people applying for asylum in Sweden and so that we should be able to register them, we had to de-prioritise certain tasks, and that was the matter of jobs”. Local people say there is something strange happening on a stretch of coastline south of Calais. From beach houses on the shore and fishing boats at sea, people have watched migrants dragging dinghies, then putting out to sea – and mysterious boats taking on passengers in the dead of night. Bernard Barron said: “Migrants have to be as discreet as possible, so they choose beaches that are as close as possible to England but far enough from the ferries so they can’t be spotted. “This area is favoured by migrants and the smugglers – English ones and other nationalities – who come to pick them up.” Until recently, migrants flocked to Calais to find a place to stow-away.
